Caro signor Andrea, grazie per averci dedicato un pochino del suo tempo

Grazie a te Oscar, per me è un onore l’interessamento di acuariorosa nei miei confronti.

Può gentilmente raccontarci un pochino come si svolge la sua vita di tutti i giorni?

Lavoro in una grossa azienda che produce parti di motore per il settore aereonautico, soprattutto militare. In questa azienda mi occupo di qualità.
Vivo a Somma Lombardo, una piccola cittadina in Italia settentrinale, a pochi km dal confine con la Svizzera.
Sono sposato ed ho un figlio di 12 anni, purtroppo affetto da una grave malattia genetica al cervello. A causa della malattia di mio figlio la mia vita è diventata piuttosto chiusa, ho dovuto mollare tutti miei precedenti hobby in quanto il 100% del mio tempo libero viene speso per la gestione in casa di mio figlio che richiede assistenza continua.
Ho due cani che amo come fossero miei figli, e soprattutto ho una moglie fantastica che riesce sempre a farmi stare bene e a farmi sorridere, ha una grande forza interiore, è la positività in persona e riesce sempre a farmi superare ogni difficoltà, è lei è il mio sole.

Mi piacerebbe sapere come e quando è entrato in questo mondo degli acquari.

Il mio primo vero acquario l’ho acquistato nel 2002, era parte di un progetto di pet-therapy per la cura di mio figlio, in quel periodo infatti la mia casa si trasformò quasi in un piccolo zoo, con tartarughe, canarini, cani, etc….
Mio figlio non mostrò mai interesse per quell’acquario, ma io avevo il dovere di insistere nel mantenerlo, e man mano che raccoglievo informazioni su libri e riviste mi appassionai sempre più all’acquariofilia fino a venirne completamente contagiato.

Quanti acquari gestisce attualmente? Quanto tempo dedica al giorno per il mantenimento di tali acquari?

Purtroppo mi è sempre più difficile dedicarmi all’acquariofilia in casa, mio figlio quando ha le crisi spacca tutto e in quei momenti la presenza di un acquario può rappresentare un enorme pericolo per la sua incolumità, per questo motivo negli ultimi anni ho rimosso quasi tutti gli acquari (ero arrivato ad averne 7, dei quali però solo due erano miei), ora ne ho solo due molto piccoli, in un’area protetta, in cui semplicemente riproduco dei muschi.
Per fortuna ho un caro amico (Davide Robustelli, personaggio molto noto in Italia, titolare di alcuni e-commerce di acquariofilia e di una serra per piante acquatiche e pesci ornamentali) che ha una fish-room a pochi km da me, con oltre 20 plantacquari allestiti, lui non aveva più tempo di seguire quegli acquari e un anno fa stava per prendere la decisione di rimuoverli e/o di convertirli all’allevamento di ciclidi africani, ma prima provò a chiedermi se ero disposto a dargli una mano nel tempo libero ed io accettai con entusiasmo, così di tanto in tanto vado a trovarlo e lui mi lascia fare quello che voglio con i suoi acquari, ad esempio l’allestimento con cui ho partecipato all’IAPLC di quest’anno l’ho realizzato proprio in uno dei suoi acquari. Nell’ultimo anno ho fatto alcuni allestimenti per lui, allestimenti che sto provando a mantenere nel tempo. Visto il pochissimo tempo a disposizione sono tutti allestimenti poco spinti, impostati per gestioni very low. Per ognuna di queste vasche impiego soli 15/20 minuti alla settimana.

Dove trova l’ispirazione quando crea i suoi acquari?

Mi piace molto lo stile compositivo Ryoboku usato da Amano nei suoi allestimenti legnosi, ne ho visti talmente tanti che inevitabilmente ne vengo un po’ condizionato, ma oltre a ciò mi ispiro ai paesaggi boschivi della mia provincia, qui c’è molto verde, il territorio della mia città fa parte del Parco del Ticino, per 20 anni ho fatto jogging e mountainbike nei boschi della mia zona, qui ci sono posti stupendi, magici, e spesso quando allestisco ho in testa delle immagini ben precise di questi posti e cerco di realizzare un qualcosa che possa esprimermi le stesse sensazioni, la stessa atmosfera. Quindi si tratta quasi sempre idealmente di paesaggi emersi, che però cerco poi di rendere esteticamente un po’ più acquatici, in pratica delle foreste sommerse.

Segue qualche regola o proporzione standard quando crea il suo hardscape?

Non seguo regole compositive, allestisco sempre istintivamente. Cerco sempre di realizzare layout selvaggi, che siano rappresentazioni di ambienti naturali incontaminati dall’uomo, primordiali, in essi esprimo sempre il mio stato d’animo e il mio desiderio di pace.

Adesso, se non le dispiace, qualche domanda tecnica:

Che tipo di substrato usa?

Per anni ho usato i prodotti della Prodac, un’azienda italiana, per la quale sono stato un collaboratore esterno. Ultimamente sto utilizzando soprattutto Seachem Flourite (Black Sand & Onyx Sand) e Tropica (Plant Substrate).

Considera la filtrazione come una parte importante?

Si, la filtrazione è fondamentale, meglio avere quindi una filtrazione sovradimensionata piuttosto che rischiare la situazione opposta.

Cos’altro considera obbligatorio quando allestisce un acquario?

– La circolazione dell’acqua: dev’essere ottima.
– L’impianto CO2: mi piacciono gli acquari straricchi di piante, quindi lo ritengo un accessorio indispensabile, che tengo in funzione 24 ore su 24, ma con erogazione blanda.
– La distribuzione del fascio luminoso: la luce deve arrivare correttamente su tutto il layout.

Che genere di pesci e di piante preferisce per le sue creazioni?

Mi piacciono i pesci da branco di piccole dimensioni, soprattutto i Caracidi. Nei miei allestimenti inoltre non mancano mai Crostacei, piccoli Loricaridi e piccoli Gasteropodi.
Per quanto riguarda le piante sono un amante delle felci (Microsorum spp. e Bolbitis spp. sono sempre presenti nelle mie creazioni) e delle piante da primo piano (Hemianthus callitrichoides e Eleocharis parvula le mie preferite).

Potrebbe spiegare brevemente come allestisce un acquario da zero?

L’allestimento da zero richiede innanzitutto un’idea chiara in testa, in base ad essa si cerca poi il materiale «decorativo» adatto (legni e rocce). Una volta trovati i legni giusti si cerca con la creazione dell’hardscape di valorizzarli al massimo.
In genere piantumo subito, inserendo anche molte piante a crescita rapida. Se posso utilizzo potature prese da altri acquari, in modo da ottenere più rapidamente una buona attività vegetativa.

Che tipo di fertilizzante usa?

Per comodità preferisco i fertilizzanti tutto in uno che si possano somministrare con cadenza settimanale, attualmente uso Profito EasyLife in vasche di medio livello e Tropica PlantNutrition in vasche con esigenze maggiori.

Cosa ne pensa dei prodotti commerciali che la maggior parte della gente considera miracolosi?

Non so esattamente a cosa tu ti riferisca. Comunque io non credo ai miracoli.

A proposito della sua visione dell’aquascaping?

Per me l’aquascaping è lo studio, la pianificazione, la realizzazione ed il mantenimento di un layout ricercato che permetta di esprimere un qualcosa di intimo, ma non può esulare da un’ottima preparazione acquariofila di base. Prima di giocare a fare l’aquascaper occorre imparare a gestire un acquario.

Nella sua opinione in quale nazione vede un maggior interesse nell’aquascaping?

A livello europeo una menzione la merita sicuramente la Russia la quale si è ben distinta nei Contest internazionali, vincendo tra l’altro l’IAPLC dello scorso anno e piazzandosi al terzo posto nell’edizione di quest’anno.

Com’è l’aquascaping in Italia?

In Italia sta crescendo il numero di appassionati e si sta elevando il livello medio delle loro opere.

Qual’è lo stile di acquario che preferisce?

Come detto prima mi piacciono gli allestimenti legnosi e selvaggi, non amo i layout troppo «puliti» e precisini, mi piace che sembri sempre un ambiente creato dalla natura e non dall’uomo.

Cosa ne pensa dei layout che riproducono paesaggi terrestri negli acquari?

Mi piacciono molto, ma nel mio caso cerco sempre di farli sembrare un po’ meno terrestri ed un po’ più acquatici, sento di avere questo dovere verso l’acquariofilia.

Conosce qualcosa della «realtà aquascape» in Spagna?

Conosco soprattutto i lavori ed il talento di Diego Sandoval, la sua passione per i microacquari mi ha contagiato. Conosco l’AAC al quale ho partecipato nel 2010, un contest con una organizzazione veramente perfetta, molto professionale.

Ci può dire un paio di aquascapers che le piacciono di più?

Al 1° posto assoluto c’è ovviamente Mr. Takashi Amano, inarrivabile, dopo di lui mi sento di menzionare in particolare Yutaka Kanno, Long Tran Hoang, Michael G.W.Wong, Filipe Alves Oliveira e Cliff Hui.

Lei gestisce un blog (Aqua Experience) ed un forum (AquaExperience.it). può raccontarmi qualcosa su di essi?

Sono stato moderatore ed amministratore per vari anni in altri forum di acquariofilia non miei, poi ho sentito il desiderio di creare qualcosa di mio.
Inizialmente è nato il blog, nel primo anno era molto ricco di contenuti, ma dopo la nascita del sito l’ho sfoltito andandolo a dedicare solo alla raccolta di foto dei miei allestimenti. Il sito di AquaExperience (e sottolieno sito con forum, non solo forum) è nato in seguito come evoluzione del blog. E’ on-line dal 1° Gen. 2010 e sta avendo un buon successo, è molto seguito e ben considerato dai motori di ricerca.

A parte gli acquari, lei ha altri hobby?

Attualmente il mio unico vero hobby è l’acquariofilia. Sono comunque anche appassionato di corse motoristiche (MotoGP e Formula1) ed amante della musica Hard Rock.

Vado ad elencarle una lista di parole e lei commenti con quello che le viene in mente:

Posti in cui si può apprendere molto ed incontrare persone eccezionali.

Inevitabili … non esiste un acquario perfettamente privo di alghe.

Il mio amico Giacomo Guarraci porta avanti da oltre 10 anni un metodo molto simile, ma quello di Guarraci è decisamente migliore …. spero che un giorno riesca a commercializzarlo e/o a parlarne su un libro … poi forse non si troverà più scritto «Diana Walstad» nelle tue interviste, bensì «Giacomo Guarraci».

Conosco il sistema Estimative Index … in linea di massima è simile al mio metodo di gestione … per il resto quando leggo il suo nome mi torna sempre in mente una sua foto in cui nuotava dentro un enorme e stupendo PlantaDiscus … ahahah.

Andrea Perotti is a well known Italian aquarist and a reference in the international aquarium world.
I was privileged to know him a little more thanks to the interview … With the exchange of emails and a look at the social networks discovered not only the exceptional aquarist, but the good man too … a fighter who I admire and since I have a great affection.

Dear Mr. Andrea, thank for dedicating us part of your time

Thank you to you, Oscar. The aquariorosa’s interest to me it’s an honor.

Can you please explain us a little bit how is your daily life?

I work for a big company that produces aeronautical engines parts, especially for military use. I deal with quality.
I live in Somma Lombardo, a small town in northern Italy, few kilometers far from Switzerland.
I’m a married man and I have a 12 years old son, unfortunately affected from a genetic brain disease. Because of my son’s disease my life is quite withdrawn; I left all my previous hobbies, because I need to spend the 100% of my free time to provide the required assistance for my son.
I have two dogs that I love as sons and an amazing wife that is always able to let myself feel good and to make myself smiling. She has an incredible fortitude, she is always positive and she is always able to help me to ride out difficulties. She is my sunshine.

I would like to know how and when you got into this world of aquariums

I bought my first true aquarium in 2002; it was a part of a «pet-therapy» project for my son’s disease treatment. In that period my home became as a zoo, with turtles, birds, dogs etc.
My son he never showed interest for that aquarium, but my duty was to insist and maintain it. Gathering informations on books and magazines, gradually I became fond of aquariology until my total «infection».

How many aquariums do you keep actually? How much time a day you dedicate to maintain aquariums?

Unfortunately at home is increasingly difficult for me to dedicate myself to the aquariology, because during my son’s crises there is a high chance for him to breaking a tank, with the consequent high risk for his safety. For this reason last years i took away almost all my 7 aquariums (where only two was mine) and currently I have only two small tanks in a safe and protected area. Within this two acquariums I’m reproducing moss.
Luckily my dear friend Davide Robustelli, a known person in Italy that’s own some aquarium’s e-commerce sites and a plants and ornamental fishes glasshouse not so far from my home, he as 20 plantaquariums but not much time to follow them. Fot this reason, one year ago, he was about to dismiss these aquariums (or to convert them to african cichlids breeding) but, just before, he asked me if I could take care of them, and I accepted with enthusiasm. Currently I go every now and then to the Davide’s glasshouse, and he gives me the opportunity to manage at my pleasure all these aquariums. For instance, I set up the layout I’ve entered at the IAPCL 2011 contest.
During last year I realized some aquascape designs that I’m trying to keep alive over time. Due to the few time available, all these aquariums aren’t extremely managed… I can spend, weekly, only 15/20 minutes each one.

Where do you get the inspiration from when creating your aquariums?

I really like the Ryoboku style, used by Amano for his wooden layouts: Probably I’m a little bit influenced by this style, because I’ve seen so many. Furthermore I’m usually inspired by wooded landscape of my my homeland. I live in a green belt because my zone is a part of the «Nature reserve of Ticino»; I rode for 20 years (walk or bike) these wooded landscapes, these wonderful and magic places and, often, I have these places in my mind when I try to set up a new aquarium, trying to recreate something that can give same emotions and flavour. For this reason, most of the time I’ve recreated outcrop landscapes, slightly modified to be a little bit more acquatic. In pratice, underwater forests.

Do you follow any norm of standard proportion when you create you hardscape?

I don’t follow compositional rules, but I’m drived by istinct. I always try to realize wild layouts that represent natural and uncontaminated environments… primordial environments… where I can convey my mood and my peace desire.

Now, if you don’t mind, a few technical questions:

Which kind of substrate do you use?

I’ve used PRODAC’s products for years (an Italian company I was an external worker). Currently I’m using almost Seachem Flourite (Black Sand & Onyx Sand) and Tropica (Plant Substrate).

Do you consider filtration as an important part?

Filtration is the base. It’s better to have oversized than undersized filtration.

What else do you consider a must when setting up an aquarium?

– Water circulation: must be optimal.
– CO2 system: I’d like aquariums with a huge number of plants, so I think is an essential item and I use it 24/24h, but dispensing it lightly.
– Light distribution: The Light must be correctly distributed on whole layout.

What kind of fishes and plants are your favourite for your creations?

I like little herd fish, mostly those of the Characidae family. In my tank never fail crustaceans, small catfish (Loricaridae) and small gastropods.
About plants, I love ferns (Microsorum spp. and Bolbitis spp. are always present in my creations) and foreground plants (Hemianthus callitrichoides and Eleocharis parvula are my favorite).

Can you please briefly explain how you setup an aquarium from zero?

In setting up a new work, you need to have a clear idea in your mind. Starting from that idea, you have to find the decorative material (wood and rock). When you’ve found the right rocks/roots/branches, you have to try to enhance them to highest with the hardscape creation.
Usually I plant immediately, inserting a lot of fast-growing plants. If possible, I use plants pruning from other aquariums because you can get a faster and good vegetative activity.

What kind of fertilizer do you use?

For convenience I use weekly a all-in-one fertilizer. Currently I give «Profito Easy Life» within medium level aquariums, and Tropica PlantNutrition when highest requirements are needed.

What do you think of marketing commercial products that many consider almost miraculous?

I don’t really understand what you mean, but anyway I don’t believe to miracles.

Regarding you aquascaping vision?

Aquascaping is the research, the plan, the realization and the maintenance of a studied layout, that allows to convey a private emotion, but it can’t be outside of a good basics aquarium knowledge. Before playing as aquascaper, you need to know how manage an aquarium.

In your opinion, in which country you see a bigger interest in the aquascaping?

At the European level I want to give a mention to Russian Federation, because has been distinguished in all International contests, winner of the last year IAPLC and placed third of this year edition.

How is aquascaping in Italy?

In Italy, the number of people fond in aquascaping is growing and the quality level of the works is raising.

Which is the aquarium style you prefer?

As I said before, I like wooden and wild layout. I don’t like clean and tidy ones; I prefer it if it looks like a natural environment, not man made.

What do you think about terrestrial landscapes in aquariums?

They like me, but I prefer to make them look a bit less terrestrial and a bit more aquatic. I feel myself to have this duty toward aquariology.

Do you know anything about the aquascaping reality in Spain?

Mainly I know the works and the talent of Diego Sandoval; his passion for micro aquariums has infected me. I know AAC and I entered this competition in 2010… a contest with a perfect organization, very professional.

Can you tell us a couple of aquascapers you like the most?

The first place is obviously for Mr Takashi Amano, that’s unreachable. Then I want to mention Yutaka Kanno, Long Tran Hoang, Michael G.W.Wong, Filipe Alves Oliveira e Cliff Hui.

You manage a blog (Aqua Experience) and a forum (AquaExperience.it). Can you tell me something about them?

For years I was a moderator and administrator for others forums not owned, then I felt the desire of create something mine.
At the beginning I create a Blog. In its first year it was full of contents, but I pruned it when the AquaExperience.it portal was born, and currently is mainly a photogallery of my works. The AquaExperience.it website (I want to point out that is a portal with forum and not only a forum) is born as a natural evolution of my blog. It’s on-line since 1st Jan 2010 and currently it has a good popular appeal; we have a great number of supporters. Moreover it’s highly regarded by web search engines.

Apart of aquariums, do you have any other hobby?

Currently my only one hobby is the aquariology. Anyway I like races (MotoGP and Formula1) and the hard rock music.

My friend Giacomo Guarraci is using a similar methodology from 10 years, but in my opinion his version is better… I hope he will can, in the future, to sell it or, at least, to talk about it in a book. If this happens, probably you will read the Guarraci’s name within your interview, instead of Walstad’s name.

I know the «Estimative Index» system… more or less it’s similar to my method. When I read his name, all the times comes in my mind a photo where he swam in a very big and wonderful PlantaDiscus… hahaha.

Es el «occidental» mejor clasificado en el The International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest obteniendo la posición 22º… Sin duda un puesto que lo coloca entre los grandes del paisajismo mundial…
Participó también este año en el Acuavida Aquascaping Contest (AAC) quedando segundo de su categoría…

Sin lugar a dudas tuve la suerte de entrevistar a un maestro del paisajismo acuático…

Dear Mr. Pasquale, thank for dedicating us part of your time

Can you please explain us a little bit how is your daily life? I’m 40 years old and I’m the owner of a small garden center. I’ve always been interested in every kind of plants: I’m a succulents and carnivorous plants collector,so plants are both my hobby and my job. I like music (I’m a guitar player) and cycling.

I would like to know how and when you got into this world of aquariums. My first aquarium goes back to my childhood,although my tanks have always been full of plants I started with aquascaping in 2006 only.
That year I discovered the web and especially the Italian aquascaping forum Aquagarden.it that has radically changed my concept of the aquarium.

How many aquariums do you keep actually? How much time a day you dedicate to maintain aquariums? At the time I’m taking care of 5 tanks. Only one of them is in my house, the other four are in my workplace, so I spend most of my day with my tanks. I never calculated how much time a day, but I think it’s certainly a lot of time. I think I’m very lucky because I have the opportunity to take care of the tanks almost everytime they need my attention.

Where do you get the inspiration from when creating your aquariums? I simply try to be a good observer of nature: every leaf, every grain of a rock can teach us the secrets of the beauty of nature. I deeply love the mountains and during my walks I usually take pictures: often these pics are my best source of inspiration.

Do you follow any norm of standard proportion when you create you hardscape? I certainly follow the general rules, such as the golden section or the rule of thirds, but I think I can say I especially follow my instinct and my aesthetic sense.

Now, if you don’t mind, a few technical questions:

Which kind of substrate do you use? I use a lot of different materials, it depends on what I want to get. In large tanks I mainly use akadama.

Do you consider filtration as an important part? Filtration is certainly fundamental, especially in early stages of a tank, but I think equally important is a good movement of water: in my larger tanks I always add an additional pump to move water.

What else do you consider a must when setting up an aquarium? I believe that «time» is the keyword: the most important thing is to do things calmly, I believe that the haste is not a good quality for an aquascaper.

What kind of fishes and plants are your favourite for your creations? Lately I prefer to use only green plants with small leaves: it is difficult for me to use colorful plants, I find them unnatural.I generally prefer to use small, not too flashy fishes like small tetras.

Can you please briefly explain how you setup an aquarium from zero? I usually spend a lot of time to complete the hardscape, sometimes more than a week: I like to treat all the details and try many versions until I get the feeling that everything is in it’s right place. After filling the tank, I put all the plants in ,turn on all the technical equipment and immediately start fertilizing. I usually set a full photoperiod (about 10 hours a day) since the first moment.

What kind of fertilizer do you use? I used a lot of products in the past. Actually I use to prepare fertilizers by myself : that allows me to dose every element separately and very accurately.

Regarding you aquascaping vision:

In your opinion, in which country you see a bigger interest in the aquascaping? No need to say that the true aquascaping home, the place where it all started is Japan. However in recent years, other Asian countries like Vietnam and China are producing excellent works.

How is aquascaping in Italy? In Italy this wonderful hobby is constantly growing. In 2009 we were one of the European countries with more participants in the IAPLC contest, only Poland had more.We have a generation of excellent young aquascapers and I believe that soon we will hear about them.

Can you tell us a couple of aquascaper you like the most? I really like some works by Masashi Ono and Fumio Shiga .

Apart of aquariums, do you have any other hobby? As I said,I’ve always been interested in plants,I collect carnivorous and succulents plants. I love the mountains and nature in all its aspects.

The man where it all get started. I had the honor to hold his hand this year. My greatest desire is to be able one day to look at nature with his eyes, with the same sensibility.

Italia está de moda y no sólo porque don Takashi Amano estuviese en Roma este mes de Junio en una exhibición fotográfica, sino sobre todo porque este año Italia fue uno de los países destacados en la más alta competición acuariofílica que se conoce: el IAPLC (International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest), o lo que es lo mismo, el concurso de paisajismo acuático que organiza la empresa que dirige aquél (ADA).

Con este acuario consiguió la posición 22º en el ya citado concurso IAPLC y el 2º puesto en el AAC (Acuavida Aquascaping Contest).

Giuseppe Landieri:

Segundo italiano clasificado en el IAPLC 2009 (puesto 56º).

En su trayectoria como paisajista destaca el tercer puesto en el IAPLC del año 2001 con este acuario:

Acuarios de estrena – «Nuova vasca» – Enrico Serena

Uno de los mejores paisajistas italianos (puesto 94º en el ADA ´09), Enrico Serena, nos enseña su nuevo proyecto paso a paso.

Aunque el acuario está recién montado ya muestra una gran belleza… Se puede observar que el estilo paisajista seguido en sus diseños es el «Nature Aquarium», cuyo propulsor de este estilo es Takashi Amano.
