Apreciado señor Sabat,
gracias por dedicarnos parte de su tiempo…
¿Puede, por favor, explicarnos un poco cómo es su vida diaria? (en qué trabaja, si tiene familia, etc.…)
Norbert Sabat:
Soy ingeniero civil – calculo estructuras de edificios con FEM (Método de Elementos Finitos) y los hago «posibles de construir» 😉 . También trabajo mucho con programas CAD. No estoy casado ni tengo hijos.

¿Cuándo se introdujo en el acuarismo?
Norbert Sabat:
Para ser honestos, en realidad nunca me tomé el acuarismo plantado muy seriamente, pero había alguna cosa que siempre me atraía.
Tuve mi primer acuario en mi infancia, que cuidó mi padre. Más tarde abandoné los peces durante 12 o 13 años hasta el 2002 cuando mi hermana recibió de sus amigos (por su 18 cumpleaños) un pez dorado en una pecera. Por alguna razón empecé a cuidar ese pez cambiando el agua cada 2 o 3 meses, alimentándolo, etc. No era una gran responsabilidad pero para muchos acuaristas (a pesar de que nadie lo admitirá) empezó con solo un pez dorado o un Luchador Siamés en una pecera pequeña.
En verano de 2003 algo me empujó a comprarle, al pez dorado, un acuario rectangular. La lástima fue que el pez dorado no era muy feliz en su nueva casa, por lo que fue devuelto a la pecera redonda, pero nuevos peces llegaron al acuario (Neones, ramis y corydoras). Fue el clásico acuario de principiante, superpoblado, infrafiltrado, poca luz y muy pobremente plantado. En este punto ni tan siquiera me planteaba un acuario plantado, si te digo la verdad. ¡¡Ni tan siquiera sabia que existían acuarios plantados!!
Todo cambió en otoño de 2003 cuando me colgué de internet y empecé a aprender sobre este hobby. Un día, surfeando, acabé en una web con fotografias de acuarios plantados (estilo Amano y Holandés) y me impactó profundamente. En ese punto, pensé que para crear un acuario de esa magnitud necesitaba una cantidad increíble de determinación y conocimiento (además pensé que la gente que creó estos acuarios eran de otro mundo).
Mi pasión creció y en enero de 2004 empecé un acuario de 100x40x45. En los siguientes meses mi fascinación por los acuarios plantados japoneses aumentó rápidamente. Como resultado, en abril de 2004 mi acuario de peces pasó a ser un acuario plantado (puse más luz, CO2, empecé a fertilizar, etc..).
Así es básicamente como empezó todo para mi.

¿De dónde saca la inspiración para crear sus acuarios?
Norbert Sabat:
De la naturaleza 🙂
Sí, probablemente sonará demasiado general. Realmente ahora no me inspiro mucho ni filosofo demasiado al respecto. Cuando quiero cambiar un paisaje simplemente lo hago, y solo me planteo «¿piedra o madera?»

¿Sigue alguna norma de proporciones estándar cuando crea su hardscape?
Norbert Sabat:
Como expliqué en mis primeras palabras soy ingeniero civil, y además pintaba y dibujaba mucho cuando era joven, o sea que conozco algunas reglas básicas del arte. Normalmente tengo la ratio de oro y esa es la principal norma para mí. Además, me encantan las raíces grandes, piedras y arena en la parte frontal.

¿Qué tipo de sustrato acostumbra a utilizar?
¿Considera la filtración como una parte importante?
¿Qué más considera fundamental cuando monta un acuario?
Norbert Sabat:
Desde hace dos años y medio utilizo sustrato de ADA. No he quitado todo el sustrato desde 2006 (cuando empiezo un nuevo layout normalmente quito parte del sustrato cuando tengo demasiado o añado sustrato cuando necesito más).
Filtración IMO es muy importante – me gustan los acuarios que se ven limpios – cuanto mayor, mejor 🙂 .
Muy importante es el CO2 y el NPK… mucha gente lo olvida.

¿Qué tipo de peces y plantas son sus favoritas en sus creaciones?
Norbert Sabat:
Plantas – musgos, rotala sp green, tenellus
Peces – realmente no tengo peces preferidos… no son importantes para mi. Quizás el Iriatherina Werneri es mi favorito ahora.
Acuario rosa:
En todos sus acuarios el fondo tiene un rol importante, dando el efecto de un horizonte… ¿cómo hace esto?
Norbert Sabat:
Normalmente utilizo un cartón blanco posicionado a unos 10 cm detrás de mi acuario de 90 cm donde enfoco una luz desde arriba. Este tipo de montajes me permite tomar fotos donde la superficie del agua (atrás) no se aprecia. Adicionalmente, este tipo de fondo junto con la iluminación desde arriba crea un efecto sombreado en la parte inferior del fondo que hace parecer el acuario más profundo. Generalmente, creo que añadiendo una gran cantidad de luz para el fondo da mejores fotografías.
Desde hace un año y medio utilizo lámparas de fotografía externas con softbox que me permiten crear un fondo de un blanco limpio y casi puro. El fondo blanco es mi favorito porque es muy neutral. El negro es también neutral pero en algunos casos con focos de fotografía puede hacer espejo y las fotografías quedan mal.

¿Cual es el acuario del que se siente más orgulloso?
Norbert Sabat:
Probablemente mi primer acuario, de 180 litros (de 2004) y el paisaje con raíces de ADA-2008.
Acuario rosa:
¿Qué otros proyectos tiene en mente?
Norbert Sabat:
¿En paisajismo? Nada especial – la primavera está llegando o sea que habrá mejores cosas que hacer. Este año no participaré en el concurso ADA, y probablemente no lo vuelva a hacer en el futuro (aunque no quiero decir un «no» definitivo). No pienso mucho en el paisajismo ni en mi acuario que tengo en casa– es solamente una parte bonita de mi habitación y algunas veces disfruto del hobby. Estoy más centrado en la fotografía – realmente me gusta este hobby.

¿Sabe alguna cosa sobre la realidad del paisajismo español?
Norbert Sabat:
Me temo que no. No os enfadéis pero España y Portugal son algo similar para mi por lo que no sé realmente qué paisajista es español y quien portugués.

Disfruto caminando con la cámara en las montañas u otros parajes naturales y últimamente disfruto haciendo fotografías a pájaros. Me gusta el silencio en la naturaleza – odio la ruidosa ciudad.

I’m civil engineer – I calculate building structure with FEM (Finite Element Method) and made it «possible to build» ;). I also work a lot in CAD programs. I’m not married and don’t have kids.

When you got introduced in the aquarium hobby?

Norbert Sabat:

Honestly, I never really treated the planted aquarium hobby very seriously but there was something that always pulled me towards it. I had my first aquarium in my childhood that my father took care of. Later on I took a break from fishkeeping for 12-13 years up until 2002 when my sister received a goldfish in a fish bowl from her friends on her 18th birthday. For some reason, I started to take care of that fish by changing the water every 2-3 months, feeding it, etc. It wasn’t a large responsibility but for many aquarists (although nobody will admit to it) it all started with just a goldfish or a Siamese fighting fish in a small cup.In the summer of 2003 something pushed me to buy the poor goldfish a regular rectangular aquarium. Unfortunately, the goldfish was not too happy in its new home so it was soon moved back to the fish bowl but new fish went into the aquarium (Neons, Rams and Corydoras). It was a classic beginner tank as it was overstocked, under filtered, low light, and very poorly planted. At that point I was not even thinking of a planted fish tank, to tell you the truth. I never even knew that planted aquariums even existed!
Everything changed in the Fall of 2003 when I got hooked up to the internet and started to learn about this hobby. One day I surfed to a site that had pictures of planted tanks (Amano style and Dutch style) and it left a deep impact on me. At that point, I thought that in order to create a fish tank of that magnitude you needed an unbelievable amount of determination and knowledge (plus I thought that people that created these tanks were from another world).
My passion grew larger and in January 2004 I started a 100x40x45 cm tank. Over the next few months my fascination with Japanese planted tanks grew very rapidly. As a result, in April 2004 I changed my fish tank over to a planted tank (I installed more lights, Co2, started to fertilize etc). This is how it basically started for me.

Where do you get the inspiration from when creating your aquariums?

From nature 🙂 -yes, this is probably going to sound too general. Right now i’m not get inspiration or i don’t make philosophy for that. Usual when i wanted change aquascape i just do it and my only goal is: «wood or stones?»

Do you follow any norm of standard proporcion when you create your hardscape?

Like I wrote in first words I am civil engineer, I also painting or drawing a lot when I was young so I know some basic rules in ART. Usual I keep in mind golden ratio and this is mayor rule to me. I also love big roots, stones and sands in foreground.

From 2.5year I use ADA substrat system – I don’t removed all substrat from 2006 (when I setup new layout I usual remove part of substrat when is to much or add substrat when I need more). Filtration IMO is very important – I like clean looking tank – bigger is better J . Very important is CO2 and NPK…lot of people forget about it.

What kind of fishes and plants are your favourite for your creations?

Plants – mosses, rotala sp. Green, tenellus
Fishes – well, I don’t have any favourites fishes, they aren’t important to me. Maybe Iriatherina werneri is my number one right now.

In all you aquariums the background has an important role, giving the effect of an horizon… How can you do this?

Norbert Sabat:
.
Usually I use a white piece of cardboard positioned 10cm behind my 90cm tank where I shine a light from the top. This type of setup lets me take pictures where the surface of the water (in rear) is not noticeable. Additionally, this type of background along with lighting from the top creates a shadowing effect on the lower part of the background so it makes the tank seem deeper. Generally, I think that adding a great amount of light for the background gives better photos.
From about 1.5 year i use external photo lamps with softbox so i can create almost pure, clean white background. White background is my favorite because is very neutral. Black is also neutral but in some cases with photolamps can work like mirrow and taken pictures are bad.

In aquascaping? Nothing special – spring is coming so there will be better things to do. I will not enter ADA contest this year and propably never again in future (but I don’t say definitely «NO» ). I don’t thinking much about aquascaping and about my home tank – this is only nice part of my room and sometimes I enjoy the hobby.
I more thinking about photography – I really love this hobby.

I guess not. Don’t be ungry but Spain and Portugal are very similar to me so I don’t really know which aquascaper is from Spain and which from Portugal.

El señor Sabat contesta a las preguntas formuladas en los comentarios de su entrevista.
¿Compras o encuentras en la naturaleza el material para tus hardscapes?
Compro el material en tiendas – desde hace tres años solo compro piedras de ADA Polonia.
No lo hago a menudo (si no me equivoco he comprado piedras un par de veces, pero compro muy cuidadosamente y miro cada piedra varias veces.
Tengo unos 50 o 60 Kg. de piedras Mantens y con estas piedras he montado siete paisajes diferentes. Lo mismo con las raíces – hace un par de años compré a un amigo tres raíces y las uso en diferentes variaciones en tres paisajes.
No busco materiales en la naturaleza porque vivo en una ciudad grande, no tengo coche por lo que simplemente no puedo conducir 300 o 400 Km. hasta las montañas polacas y buscar piedras durante unos días.
¿Las urnas y el sistema de iluminación, ¿los haces tu mismo?
No, en mi acuario de 90 cm uso Arcadia Pentanal Serie 3 con HQI de 150W + 2 tubos de 18W T8. Me gusta esta luminaria por su diseño.
Al principio usaba una luz DIY en mis acuarios más pequeños porque en 2004 y 2005 no había muchos sistemas de iluminación con un buen nivel de luz. En acuarios estándar tienes 0,8 a 1 W por galón, lo cual es bueno para plantas de poca luz, pero no para los de crecimiento rápido con plantas de tapiz y plantas de hojas rojas.
Además mis acuarios pequeños no eran estándar con lo que no podía usar cualquier iluminación… y por supuesto mi presupuesto no era tan grande como ahora.
¿Cual es la principal fuente de la que has conseguido tus conocimientos de este mundo?
Internet, por supuesto – Todo está ahí. Leí algunos foros y desde hace un par de años leo el Aquajournal – No entiendo el japonés pero las imágenes son más importantes que 1000 palabras.
¿Qué piensas de los paisajes terrestres en acuarios?
Si preguntas por paisajes tipo “cascada”, “granja con árboles y animales de plástico”, no me gustan.
Si me preguntas por paisajes tipo ”paisaje de montañas”, me gustan 🙂
Dices que montas tus paisajes con piedra o madera, ¿no usas nunca los dos al mismo tiempo?
He usado madera y piedra en el mismo paisaje tres veces.
Me gusta este tipo de combinaciones pero para mi el mayor problema es encontrar buena madera para acuarios de 90 cm.
Me gustan las raíces con muchas ramificaciones pero es difícil encontrar buenas raíces porque la mayoría son o demasiado grandes o demasiado pequeñas.
Las piedras las puedes usar en varias combinaciones – puedes usar 2-3 piedras para construir uno grande… pero la madera debe estar en perfecto estado – busqué mis tres raíces durante un año.
Por supuesto hay muchas raíces en tiendas pero el 95% no me dicen nada.
Hablas de la “regla de oro”. ¿Puedes explicarlo para novatos?
Mi inglés no es suficientemente bueno para explicar de qué va todo esto.
Vamos a decir simplemente que casi todas las piezas de arte tienen una proporción perfecta en todos sus elementos. Si lees “El código Da Vinci” (jajaja) probablemente habrás oído hablar del numero Fi. Este número es aproximadamente 1,618 y eso es el significado matemático de la partición lineal.
Si miras todos los layouts famosos con piedras o con madera muchos de ellos tienen un punto focal como una piedra mayor, un punto central en madera, una playa de río, una mata mayor de plantas (p. e. grupo de Microsorum), etc. Si miras más en detalle veras que este punto focal esta en la ratio dorada – desde un lado del tanque hasta el punto focal tiene una distancia virtual de valor “1”, y del punto focal al otro lado del tanque la distancia tiene un valor “1,618”.
A la naturaleza no le gusta la simetría. Por supuesto nadie usa una regla para montar un paisaje acuático pero todos los puntos focales son desplazados desde el centro hacia la derecha/izquierda.
Lo mismo con la perspectiva – ponemos un horizonte virtual en la parte trasera y focalizamos casi toda la línea de atrás a delante para crear una visión 3D. De nuevo, mira los mejores trabajos del concurso de ADA o de Amano y compara. En estos casos en los mismos acuarios (por ejemplo 90x45x45) los malos paisajes se ven planos, y los buenos se ven en 3D.
No lo sé explicar mejor – busca información sobre perspectiva, ratio dorada y mira composiciones de Takashi Amano y otros de los buenos.
No eres un fan de los foros. Dices que te aburren. ¿Qué es lo que te aburre exactamente?
Estoy en el paisajismo y los tanques plantados desde hace más de 5 años ahora.
Al principio mi conocimiento era “cero” y leí muchos foros en Polonia y otros grupos internacionales. Además también contacté con otras personas como yo e intercambiamos conocimientos y mi experiencia fue aumentando.
Después de 2-3 años empecé a perder interés en los foros porque no había mucho más que aprender. No soy un freak de la química o sea que no tenia mucho interés en esas cosas de la química – si no sabes de fertilizantes eso no quiere decir que no puedas crear acuarios bonitos y sanos.
Casi cada día puedes encontrar en foros posts como “Algas – ¡Ayudadme!, “¿Cual es la ratio entre NPK?”, “Mis plantas no crecen”, “¿Que filtración/iluminación debería usar?”, “¿Es importante el CO2?”, etc. ¿Puedes contestar estas preguntas cuantas veces? ¿3, 5, 10 veces?
Después de un año estás harto de eso y cada vez escribes menos en los foros.
Me aburría toda esa discusión sobre los precios de ADA – mucha gente escribe diciendo que ADA es caro. ¿Y que? No es obligatorio usar ADA para tener tanques bonitos. Si no quieres gastar dinero no lo compres, tan fácil como esto. No tienes por que conducir un Bugatti Veiron… con un Ford Fiesta es suficiente, ¿captas lo que quiero decir?
Esto es lo que me aburre, y por eso dejé prácticamente de escribir en los foros ni muestro mis layouts tampoco en ellos.

Do you buy or you find in the nature the material for your hardscapes?
I buy material in shops – During the last 3 years I buy only stones from ADA Poland. Not often (if I remember well I bought stones two times) but I buy carefully and watch every stone several times. I have about 50-60kg of Mantens stones and with these stones I have build about 7different layouts. The same with roots – 2 years ago I bought to a friend 3 roots and I used them in different variation in 3 layouts. I don’t search materials in nature because I live in a big town, I don’t have car so I can’t simply drive 300-400km to the polish mountains and search stones for some days.
The tanks and the lighting system, you do them by yourself?
No. In my 90cm tank I use Arcadia Pentanal Series 3 with 150W HQI+2x 18W T8 bulbs. I like this lighting system very much as design. In the beggining I used DIY lighting on my smaller tanks because in 2004-2005 there wasn’t to many lighting systems with good value of light. In standard tank you have 0.8-1WPG – this is good for shadow plants layout but not for fast growing with carpet plants and red leaves plants. Also my small tanks was not standard so no lighting system was fitting…and of course my budget wasn’t big enough as now.
Which is the main source where you get your knowledge of this world from?
Internet of course – everything is there. I read few forums and since about 2 years I read AquaJournal – I don’t understand japanese but pictures are more important than 1000 words.
What do you think about terrestrial landscapes in aquariums?
If you ask about layouts like “waterfall”, “farm with trees and plastic animals” – I don’t like them.
If you ask about layout like “mountain scape” – I like them 🙂
You say that you build up your layouts with stones or wood, ¿don’t you use both of them at the same time?
I used wood and stones in the same layout 3 times. I like this kind of combination but for me the main problem is to find good wood for 90cm tank. I like big branchy driftwood but its hard to find good ones because most of them are too small or too big. Stones you can use in several combinations – you can use 2-3 stones to build one BIG….but wood should be in perfect shape – I had to search for my 3 roots about 1 year. Of course there is lot of different driftwood in shops but 95% doesn’t “speak to me”.
You talk about the golden rule, Can you explain it to the newcomers?
My english is not good enough to explain what is all about. Let’s simply say that almost all beautiful pieces of art have perfect proportion in all elements. If you read “Da Vinci Code” (hahaha) you propably heard about number Fi. This number is about 1.618 and this is “mathematical meaning” of line partition.
If you watch all famous layouts with stones or with wood lots of them have a focal point like a big stone, central point of wood, river beach, big bunch of plants (i.e. group of microsorum) etc.
If you look closer you can find that this focal point is in golden ratio – from one side of the tank to the focal point a virtual distance have a value of “1” and from focal point to the other side of the tank the distance have a value of “1.618”. Nature dont like symetry.
Of course no one use ruler to build an aquascape but all focal points are moved from center to the left/right. Same thing with perspective – we put virtual horizon in the backround and focus almost all line from foreground to background to create 3D vision.
Again take a look to the famous work from ADA contest or from Amano and compare with the less good. In these cases in same tanks (for example 90x45x45) bad layout looks flat, while good ones looks like 3D. I can’t explain it better– search info about perspective, golden ratio and see layouts tutorials from Takashi Amano and others good ones.
You are not a fan of forums. You say that they bore you. What is what bored you exactly?
I am in aquascaping and planted tanks hobby over 5years now.
At the beggining my knowledge was “zero” and I read lot of forums in Poland and from other international groups. I also contacted with several people like me so we exchange our knowledge and my experience growed.
After 2-3years I started losing interest on forums because there wasn’t much more to learn – I’m not a chemistry-freak so I was not interested about all chemistry stuff – if you don’t know something about ferts this doesn’t mean that you can’t create a nice and healty looking tank. Almost everyday on forums you can find thread like “Algae-help me”, “What should be ratio between NPK?”, “My plants daesnt grow”, “What filtration/light i should use?”, “Is CO2 important?” etc. You can answer that questions how many times? 3,5,10times? After a year you are “sick” about that and you start writing on forums less every month. I was bored about all the people speaking about ADA prizes – lots of people wrote that ADA is very expensive. So what?
You don’t need to use ADA to have beautiful tank . If you don’t want spend money don’t buy it – As simple as that. You don’t need to drive a Bugatti Veiron….Ford Fiesta is good enough – catch my point?
This is all boring me so I almost stoped writing in forums and don’t show my layouts there as well.
